Pull up resistor?
« on: August 28, 2017, 02:04:36 PM »
Sorry for the repeated silly questions.  I have encoders that have A+ A- B+B-Z+ and Z- signals as well as the +5v and ground connections.  Near as I can tell these are line drive units as they require a separate power supply (over what my Gecko G320X can provide) as they require 250MVA to operate.  I have gone over everything many times and find no flaws in wiring however as soon as power is supplied my servos runaway.  This is a conversion on an older machine so we'll call it frankencnc.  I am wondering if I have missed the boat on what I need to get a good signal from the encoders as I have no dither or signal.  I do not have an oscilloscope to verify the pattern coming from the encoder.  I changed the drive to the other axis and have the same results.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

First guess..... your encoder signals are connected in the opposite
phase from that needed for your motor connections. Try swapping
the A and B channels of the encoder or the + and - wires to the
motor, but not both.

Second guess..... your encoders do not have a shared ground
reference with the inputs of the G320X. The ground of the encoder
power must be connected to the ENC GND on the G320X even when
using an external power source.

Third guess.... your encoders are not making valid signals. You should
be able to measure the output voltage of each phase (A, B) to ENC GND
using a regular meter by removing the motor wires and very carefully
moving the shaft of the motor by hand. With some practice you should be
able to stop the shaft with the signal at 0 volts and at near 5 volts on each
signal. This will prove that the electrical output is valid.

The shared ground signal was the fix.  I was told earlier by a specific source that I should not do that.  THANKS A MILLION.  Now on to the pc side of things to make the job buttons work.  Thanks again.

The other guy was probably thinking of the Step and Direction signal inputs
which are isolated.
